Pavement design options
Our extensive range of hard landscaping products includes a wide variety of colours, textures and sizes that allow you to create your own custom solutions. In recent years there has been a continuing shift toward planning being used as a positive force in shaping both our places and our communities. This has led to an increase in the use of Master Planning, which looks at all aspects of place forming, including the specification of hard landscaping products, at an early stage within the development process – typically, this will be around design stage B or C within the RIBA Plan of Works.
Brett Landscaping provides a comprehensive range of hard landscaping solutions that give design flexibility within master planning for both new and re-development projects. Our expert design service can help you to select and specify the range of products that best suit your project, both in terms of trafficking, performance and aesthetics, as well as offering assistance with design and installation.
The depth and scope of the Brett range for domestic application, allied to our professional design service and understanding of current legislation, puts Brett in an unparalleled position to help housebuilders and developers. Our product and design expertise can help achieve the highest materials ratings:
- Using constructions from the Green Guide
- Maximising points from the Code for Sustainable Homes
- Maximising points when designing to BREEAM thereby boosting the sustainability credentials of the development.
Similarly, incorporating our range of permeable paving options into a development can ensure compliance with the legislative requirements for flood risk management. Whatever the project, Brett will be able to help develop attractive product design packages that will maximise the aesthetic impact and cost efficiency of the development. Additionally, when installed by a member of the highly respected Brett Approved Installer network we are also able to offer extended product guarantees to provide additional peace of mind for the homeowner.
The streets which connect developments and residential areas are more than just thoroughfares for motor vehicles. Legislation and guidance today demand that vehicles and pedestrians should co-exist and integrate safely and efficiently – maximising the value of our shared spaces.
Brett understand this and that an integral part of design for these communities must include attractive and safe zones for pedestrians alongside low maintenance, clearly demarcated areas for traffic as advocated by the ‘Manual for Streets’ and ‘Home Zones’ documents. This doesn’t mean thousands of signs and yellow lines everywhere. Our extensive product range with its wide variety of options in colour, texture and size, can be used to create visual demarcations between wheeled and foot traffic that users understand intuitively. This engages with the ‘shared spaces’ concept now being widely adopted for our urban and residential areas and proven to reduce local average traffic speeds. According to the ‘Manual for Streets’ this can be by as much as 2.5-4.5 mph, enough to potentially save lives.
Urban areasThe wider urban environment today includes a demand for reducing traffic volumes to minimise both congestion and Carbon emissions thereby enhancing the utility of our urban spaces.
An example of the type of application where Brett has considerable expertise is in the area of bus stop design using the Brett Kassel bus boarding kerb system. The correct design of product allows proper bus positioning and reduces the boarding gap to below 50 mm. This provides faster and safer access to public transport and offers a greener way to travel compared with private vehicles; in this way commuters are encouraged to leave their cars at home and reduce the demands placed on our road network.
Similarly, the integration of the Brett Trief containment kerb system has been proven to reduce the risk of vehicles leaving the carriageway. The Brett Trief system can also be used to create pedestrian havens or provide directional indication on roundabouts thereby reducing the need for signage.
Both of these products can be integrated with our paving ranges to create attractive, sustainable spaces for the future that users will instinctively understand and actively engage with.
InfrastructureOur expertise in all aspects of landscaping design enables Brett to offer advice on user safety, practical layout and aesthetic issues. We can then translate these requirements into a full installation design including detailed installation diagrams, calculation of quantities and phased deliveries if required.
Early involvement and effective design at the outset, enables Brett to provide packages that can minimise on-site cutting, improve site safety as well as reducing construction waste, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of your project.
Our extensive product range and design expertise can also help when designing specialist commercial projects such as ports, container yards or other infrastructure.
Integrating products such as machine lay block paving with containment kerbs to create for example, toll booth plazas all help to improve our environment whilst delivering the heavy duty performance requirements of the engineer.
